Explore our Collections

Southland’s Rural Heritage Centre spans several buildings, each housing local and regional farming collections and displays for visitors to explore.

Each building is named to honour a significant club member.

Fraser Pearce Steam Shed

The Fraser Pearce Steam Shed houses the colossal 1910 Garrett steam engine. One of three (possibly more) left in the world, and the only one operational in New Zealand. If you are lucky enough to visit when this engine is steaming, it is a sight to behold.

Other highlights here include a 1910 Garrett traction engine and other smaller steam engines and paraphernalia.

A function space, with kitchen facilities is also available here for larger groups when visiting.
